George R. R. Martin began the series, A Song of Ice and Fire, with A Game of Thrones, published in 20001. Meisha Merlin Publishing, Inc. announced a limited edition of the 2nd book in the series, A Clash of Kings, with a limited edition. The remainder of the six book series was to be included as a print run of 500 sets. The artist, John Howe, of Tolkein fame, joined to illustrate this special edition. Forty-eight numbered sets were to be signed by both author and artist, including 3 color plates plus 60 black and white illustrations. Fifty-Two lettered sets were to additionally include original remarks sketch by John How on the title pages, gilt edges, attached bookmark and illustrated slipcover. The set purchase price was $2,500, with the instructions on how to certify the number to match the original run of A Game of Thrones.
The original promise date for A Clash of Kings was June 2003. The research shows that the limited edition is available today through independent booksellers at approximately 1/3 the original price. Bantam books published the entire series where the sets can be purchased on Amazon.com and Kindle.com. The e-book and hardcover sets range from $21 to over $300.
Obviously, the renowned A Song of Fire and Ice series is still a popular seller. In fact, the first two books of the series were made into TV productions of a serial program. Now, George R. R. Martin aficionados wait patiently for each new installment of his books. Meisha Merlin Publishing, Inc. began a tradition of printing science fiction series in classic limited editions that endures with not only collectors but also avid sci-fi readers.
