MMP, Inc. Robert A. Heinlein Collection

Publishing the Best in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror

In 2006, The Robert A. and Virginia Heinlein Prize Trust chose Meisha Merlin Publishing, Inc. to publish The Virginia Edition: The Definitive Collection of Robert A. Heinlein. The announcement was a tremendous boost for the reputation of the small independent publishing house. The Robert A Heinlein collection contained Novels, short stories, speeches, notes and letters that spanned over four decades of his writing.

The collection would have 46 titles in both cloth bound and leather bound editions. Only 5,000 sets would be produced, with 20 of the sets to be reserved for a special edition run. The price of the sets ranged from $2500 for the clothbound set to $3900 for the special edition. The value of The Virginia Edition was not only in the ownership of Heinlein’s entire works, but also in the quality of the production for the titles. Meisha Merlin Publishing, Inc. took pride in the attention to cover material, binding, paper and dust covers for each level of production.

Robert Heinlein is considered the trailblazer for science fiction as literature and art. His work was first recognized in the Saturday Evening Post, in the late 1940’s. His background in engineering and his military experience evolved into research and political writings that gained a wide audience from scientific and science fiction lovers alike. He is attributed with the invention of the waterbed. His writings explored space as the future location for colonization. Today, we have one-way tickets available to Mars!

The Virginia Edition is now available from the Virginia Edition Publishing Company with the Robert A. and Virginia Heinlein Prize Trust. The Mission of the Trust is to “encourage and reward progress in commercial space activities which advances the Heinleins’ dream of humanity’s future in space.”

Sadly, the Meisha Merlin Publishing Company closed before the Heinlein project was complete. However, the groundwork and quality established by MMP, Inc. vision is still available.
